I have done some kind of Financial planning since I got out of college. However that was mainly saving money and depositing in a bank, getting a fixed deposit done and be happy (sorry I am a bit old school). Around 2004 I started working with a reputed bank in India to help invest money in various schemes. I was the lucrative NRI that time and a bit naive when it came to financial planning. Unfortunately I was duped in making some wrong investments and lost heavily. It all started on a lazy Sunday morning, when I was all set to venture out to a mall to buy more of what I didn’t need. I chanced upon a personal invite for a 30 mins discussion on personal finances at an ice cream joint within my residential complex. I almost crumbled the invite, when I thought to myself that unlike any other random brochure, someone had actually made an effort to write a personalized letter, put it in an elegant envelope and had it hand delivered. Earning money is just the first part. How you handle your hard earned money is the subsequent big challenge and that’s where Sharath’s stepped in my case! As a young man with very limited knowledge about finances, the biggest challenge I was facing was – Not knowing where to park my money. Before we were introduced to Sharath we were facing so many challenges pertaining that comes along with managing one’s money like not sorting out the existing mess, knowing where to invest, fear/concern of money, wrong/biased advice from bankers & the run of the mill intermediaries, getting rid of debt etc. All of this resulted in us not taking the all important ‘first’ step of getting started mainly because of lack of knowledge and the fear of getting even more stuck with the ‘to dos’. But then my colleague introduced us to Sharath & everything changed. It’s sad that I have to explain this difference in these explicit words because there are just so many “agents” in market who would love to act as your “financial advisers”. He is a pleasant person to talk to & immensely professional when it comes to business. With him by your side, your financial lives are in GOOD hands! Our approach towards looking at financial assets, investments, returns has changed a lot after working with Sharath over the last 2 years. I first got to know about Sharath & FWM couple of years back, when I found one of his detailed flyers on the importance of financial planning in my mailbox. Then I attend a session at my office, organized by one of my colleague. Why should one write or speak about FWM? Here are a few of my personal thoughts on why I did talk to FWM and why am I writing about them: In today’s world, with the dangers of financial crisis still looming high, it is imperative for us to understand how can we save that extra penny and make it work for us. The answer lies in having a financial plan. The next question is– whom should we approach to help us with financial planning – our banker or FWM? And if FWM, what is it that demarcates them from another planner or our bankers? The first and the foremost would be that Sharath (FWM) educates you on financial planning.
